# BearCanisterOK data foundation (checked 2026-10-26)

Files: canisters.csv/json, areas.csv/json, matrix.csv/json, SOURCES.md. No prices included.

## Counts
- Canister/container models: 45 (28 hard canisters, 5 soft bags, 5 hard cases/safes/backpack, 6 panniers/drums, 1 large container). 'launch_page=y' for hard canisters + Ursack = 30.
- Areas: 64 (verified 30, partial 28, needs verification 6).
- Matrix rows: 2880 (45 x 64). Status: {'NOT_LEGAL': 379, 'LIKELY_LEGAL': 242, 'LEGAL': 738, 'OPTIONAL_OK': 433, 'NOT_REQUIRED': 540, 'VERIFY': 548}.

## Matrix statuses
LEGAL = meets the area's named list. LIKELY_LEGAL = area names no list; listed hard canister should satisfy the written standard. OPTIONAL_OK = would be accepted, but canister not required there. NOT_REQUIRED = no canister listing rule. NOT_LEGAL = fails the list or hard-sided rule. VERIFY = rule or mapping not confirmed.
The matrix is generated by rule logic in /workspace/bearcanisterok/build/build.py (not per-cell guesses).

## Known gaps
1. Official SIBBG page (sierrawild.gov) was down; list taken from NPS copies (Yosemite page, SEKI PDF). The Yosemite list was last updated 2015.
2. BearVault name mapping: IGBC uses 'BV250 Solo/BV350 Solo'; SIBBG/Olympic use plain names. Assumed same product; flagged in igbc_name_match.
3. Specs mostly come from search summaries of manufacturer pages; many fields blank (see spec_basis). Only BearVault, Lighter1 and UDAP weight were fetched directly.
4. Many USFS orders say only 'container designed to prevent access by bears' without a list; those cells are LEGAL/LIKELY_LEGAL by written standard, not by a named list.
5. Six areas need verification before publishing: Lake Clark, Bob Marshall/Scapegoat/Great Bear, Idaho Panhandle, Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie, Chattahoochee (AT), Catskills.
6. Old pages: Glacier Bay (2019), Wrangell-St. Elias (2020), Katmai (2022), Gates of the Arctic (2023). Mt. Shasta order expires 2026-11-08; Shoshone order ends 2026-12-31.
7. NOCA page says six cross-country zones but lists seven.
8. IGBC 'not confirmed as available' models (BV250/300/350/400, Garcia 812, Bare Boxer, Lighter1, Bear Keg, etc.) are still certified but may not be sold; flagged in igbc_list_status.
9. Pannier mapping between SIBBG and IGBC entries is approximate. Olympic's pannier list not mapped.
10. Areas not covered: Granite Chief, Flat Tops, Mount Zirkel, Eagle Cap, Alpine Lakes, Golden Trout detail, Bighorn NF, Uinta, etc.
11. Ursack in IGBC areas is LEGAL/VERIFY on the written rule; some areas may not allow tie-off in treeless terrain.
