Is the BearVault BV ONE Adjustable legal in Yosemite National Park?
Not legal
No. The BearVault BV ONE is not approved for Yosemite, Sequoia or Kings Canyon, according to BearVault's own FAQ, and it is not on the NPS list for those parks.
The BV ONE is IGBC-certified (cert. 255500, listed by IGBC as "BV One 1"), and that is why it looks legal on many gear pages. Yosemite does not accept IGBC certification alone. It accepts only the models on its allowed-container list, and the BV ONE is not on it.
Heads-up before you rely on this
- Source page dated 2018-05-15. The official page we rely on shows a date of 2018-05-15. Land managers may have changed the rule since then, so treat this page as a starting point and re-check the source.
- Official SIBBG list page was unreachable. The Sierra Interagency Black Bear Group site was down for maintenance on 2026-10-26. We used the NPS-hosted copies of the list (Yosemite page and the Sequoia & Kings Canyon PDF).
- Container list last updated 2015. NPS says the Yosemite allowed-container list (last updated 2015) is still valid as of July 2026. New models released since then are not on it.
Verify with the land manager before you go. This pair carries open questions, listed above, and rules change.
What to know
The same is true in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, which use the same SIBBG-derived list. The table below shows the BV ONE across Yosemite and every Sequoia and Kings Canyon zone we track. Where the park does not require a canister (the "rest of backcountry" row), the container still has to meet the list if you use it as your food storage.
If you are buying a canister for a Sierra trip, the BV450 Jaunt and BV500 Journey are both on the list. The BV425 Sprint and BV475 Trek are not on it either, so the model name matters more than the brand.
